Project Mission
Educating students from the ages of 5-18, the Tibet Primary School Project hosted by Jonang Foundation provides the facilities, instructors, and classroom environments for Tibetan nomad children to learn the skills necessary for them to progress onto secondary education and college. Concentrated around Jonang monasteries in the remote Amdo region of Far Eastern Tibet (Qinghai Province, China), this school project constructs schoolhouses, provides qualified teachers, and outfits schools with supplies.
Largely defined by its nomadic way of life, the Amdo region of Tibet offers limited access to education. With schools being scarce and tuition being unaffordable for most, nomad Tibetan children in this region often do not have the resources to receive a basic education. This school project enables Tibetan children to recieve a primary education free of costs.
Sujects introduced by the Tibet Primary School Project beyond the standard curriculum of reading and writing in the Tibetan language include: mathematics, world history, science, geography, Chinese and English language study.
Project Status
We are currently constructing a schoolhouse called, "Losal Ling" or "The Oasis for Clear Learning." This schoolhouse is located in the Golok cultural region of Amdo, Tibet (Qinghai Province, China). It is being built adjacent to a Jonang Monastery and will serve as a boarding school for 250-300 students.
The schoolhouse will be a 2-tiered construction built in traditional Tibetan style architecture. The square footage is approximately: 125 feet long x 50 feet wide.
A temporary schoolhouse was built in 2005 to accommodate the young students. This construction is a small building with 4 classrooms. During the summer of 2006, concrete-slab rooms were built within the same enclosure of these classrooms to serve as dormitories for the students during the winter months. The students meet in tents during the summertime.
Ground was broken in May of 2006 and the preliminary structure of the schoolhouse was built last summer, 2006. This preliminary structure includes the elevated foundation, the perimeter rock bedding, the outer walls, and windows.
There are currently 70 students receiving an education under the care of this project. New students arrive periodically from all over Tibet. Though the majority of students are from the surrounding Golok regions, more than 15 students are from Lhasa and Central Tibet (U-Tsang; Xizang/TAR).
